Suzy Peters stands at the forefront of an exciting chapter in marine sports history, serving as a systems engineer in the first-ever Women's America's Cup and the Youth America's Cup. Her role within the team is critical, ensuring the smooth operation and safety of the complex systems that power the AC40 yacht and its chase boat communications.
As a systems engineer, Suzy's primary responsibilities include managing communications between the two chase boats and the AC40 yacht, and collaborating with the electrical and hydro engineers to maintain all onboard systems. These systems are vital for both the performance and safety of the yacht. Any malfunction could lead to potentially dangerous situations and would disrupt all sailing activities. Suzy's expertise is pivotal in analyzing data to preemptively identify and resolve any technical issues on the AC40.
Suzy's journey in the marine industry has been marked by significant learning experiences, including a three-month stint with INEOS Britannia, a leading team with extensive experience in handling these advanced boats. This opportunity allowed her to gain invaluable insights and knowledge. However, she notes that working independently now offers a unique set of challenges and learning opportunities. Without the fallback of an experienced team, Suzy and our shore team are constantly learning and evolving, making the experience both demanding and thrilling.
Being part of the first Women's America's Cup is a momentous occasion for Suzy. The event features some of the best sailors from around the world, promising intense and competitive racing in Barcelona this Autumn. She is also passionate about inspiring the younger generation to pursue careers in the marine industry. Her advice to aspiring professionals is simple, "Seize every opportunity."
