Sport is a Platform for Change, and it is Our Responsibility to Use it As Such
Our Wider Purpose
The United Nations recognises sport as “an important enabler of sustainable development”, and a vital tool in achieving its UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and 2030 Agenda. Sport is highly visible, and with visibility comes influence. With billions of participants and fans who regularly engage with sports brands and media, its reach is unprecedented.
Sport is a platform for change, and it is our responsibility to use it as such.
Athena Pathway believes that sailing is uniquely placed to drive this change and to inspire others to do the same. We are acutely aware of our responsibility to protect and preserve the natural resources we love and depend on. We understand our role as stewards and the gravity of the platform we have been given. We also know that sustainability is multi-faceted and that championing gender equality, diversity, and youth empowerment is central to achieving progress that is sustained, meaningful and positive.
The 1851 Trust
Off the water, Athena Pathway aims to equip individuals with life skills in multiple fields. As an IOC Sustainability Ambassador, Hannah hopes the Pathway can demonstrate the scope of high-performance sailing in driving ocean-focused climate action which places gender equity and youth empowerment front and centre.
The Athena Pathway Programme is partnered with the 1851 Trust, a specialist education and sports charity committed to harnessing the power of athletes and elite sport to change perceptions, build diversity and inspire young people globally through STEM learning and climate action.
Founded by Sir Ben Ainslie in 2014, the Trust seeks to bring more diversity into Britain’s marine industry, including through work at the grassroots level in schools across the UK. Athena Pathway will build upon this ambition, offering significant opportunities to empower young people at the highest level of the sport and equipping them with unique and transferable skills to excel in whatever career path they choose.
